PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
MIT iGEM Team Lead Instructor, 2013-present
Advised teams of 12 undergraduates each summer in choosing, developing, executing and presenting an original research project in synthetic biology. Developed pedegogical strategies for teaching undergraduate researchers necessary research skills, including reading scientific literature, experimental design, cloning and DNA manipulation, data analysis, and science communication.
Research Scientist in the laboratory of Professor Ron Weiss, 2012-present
MIT Synthetic Biology Center, Cambridge MA
Implemented synthetic gene networks in Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Chinese Hamster Ovary cells for intercellular signaling, quorum sensing, fate determination and two-dimensional patterning. Wrote software for flow cytometry data analysis. Secondary roles in scientific communication and analytical instrumentation.
Research Assistant with Dr. David C. Schwartz, 2004-2012
University of Wisconsin – Madison, Madison, WI
Used Optical Mapping, a novel genomics platform, to discover and characterize structural polymorphisms in the human genome. Used statistical, computational and experimental techniques to refine Optical Mapping protocols. Developed a Hidden Markov Model (HMM) for Optical Mapping data analysis.
Research Assistant with Dr. Janet Braam, 2003-2004
Rice University, Houston, TX
Created and screened transgenic Arabidopsis thaliana to investigate the transcription profile of calmodulin genes. Screened T-DNA insertion mutants in the calmodulin genes, and tested them under various environmental stresses.
Research Assistant with Dr. Michael W. Deem, 2002-2003
Rice University, Houston, TX
Implemented and tested a new energy model for a Monte Carlo molecular biophysics simulator.
Summer Medicine and Research Training Program, 2002
Human Genome Sequencing Center, Baylor College of Medicine, Houston, TX
Implemented a “stitching” algorithm to order and orient sequence contigs in the finishing stages of the Human Genome Project.
